Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • All URL addresses in the text (e.g., http://pkp.sfu.ca) are activated and ready to click.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • The text is in compliance with the journal's Policy on Artificial Intelligence and includes an AI Use Declaration Statement as described in the policy.
  • The text, if submitted to a peer-reviewed section (e.g., Articles), has had the authors' names removed. If an author is cited, "Author" and year are used in the bibliography and footnotes, instead of author's name, paper title, etc. The author's name has also been removed from the document's Properties, which in Microsoft Word is found in the File menu.
  • I, the author, represent and warrant that the material I am submitting for publication (the Work): a) does not contain any libelous or unlawful statements; b) does not infringe on any copyright, privacy rights or any other proprietary rights; c) has not been previously published elsewhere in its entirety. In the event, the Work contains material that has been previously published, such excerpted material has been attributed to the proper author(s) and identifies where it has been previously published; and d) is my sole, original work, or in the case the Work is prepared jointly by more than one author, I warrant that I have been authorized by all co-authors to submit the Work on their behalf.
  • I agree to hold harmless, indemnify and defend the journal publishers, its employees, contractors and agents from any and all losses, damages, expenses, claims, suits and demands of whatever nature (including legal fees and expenses on a solicitor client basis) resulting from any breach of the above warranties.
  • By submitting the Work, I agree that the right to reproduce and distribute the Work has been given to the journal and its publishers and that they may authorize third parties to republish, index or share the Work in alternate formats. Author permission will be obtained for any publication outside of the International Journal of E-learning& Distance Education. However, I understand that I as author will retain copyright of the Work and may reuse and redistribute the Work.
  • In submitting this article for publication in the Journal of Distance Education, I agree to support the peer review process by serving as a reviewer for a minimum of one year and to review three articles if asked.

Author Guidelines

Please note that IJEDE is currently taking a short pause while we update our policies and is not accepting new article submissions at this time. We will reopen for submissions August 24th, 2026.  

General Author Guidelines

Language IJEDE publishes articles in the language submitted (French or English). Abstracts are provided in both languages. Frequently manuscripts are returned to the author for English language and formatting issues. We strongly advise all authors to have their manuscripts professionally edited; authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to have their manuscripts reviewed by a native English speaker prior to submitting them to the IJEDE for peer review.

Manuscript Sections A publishable paper should contain the following: 1. Abstract (150-250 words); 2. Keywords; 3. Introduction (what is the problem?); 4. Literature review including relevant theory/framework; 5. Research design and methods; 6. Findings/results; 7. Discussion, implications, and limitations; 8. Conclusions; 9. AI use declaration statement; 10. References

Format All documents must be submitted in Word format. Articles are not to exceed 7000 words excluding graphics. Reports and Dialogues are not to exceed 3500 words. Use standard font and double-space throughout, including block quotations, and references. Provide an abstract of approximately 200 words that summarizes the main points of the article. Submit a biographical note for each author of not more than 50 words using the Online Journal System. IJEDE's editorial style conforms to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.).

Bias-Free Language Please ensure your paper refers to all people with inclusivity and respect and avoids biased language. Chapter 5 of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th ed.) provides detailed recommendations. If you do not have access to the Publication Manual, please review the resources on bias-free language available on the APA website, as well as the APA's Inclusive Language Guide. If you are not certain where to start, the APA's Brief Guide to Bias-Free and Inclusive Language provides an overview. 

Referencing Sources cited appear in parentheses after each reference (direct or otherwise), giving author's name (unless mentioned in text), year of publication, and page number(s) in the case of direct quotes. Enclose quotes of 40 or fewer words in double quotation marks in the text; indent quotes longer than 40 words in block format; page numbers must be given. List all sources alphabetically at the end of the manuscript under the heading References using APA style. Graphics and Illustrations All illustrations, figures, and tables should be placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end. Number tables and figures with Arabic numerals and provide titles that reflect the content.

Fees No fees are charged for article submission or processing.

*New* Policy on Artificial Intelligence (AI)

For Authors

I. Authorship

  • AI cannot be an Author. Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Large Language Models) do not meet the criteria for authorship because they cannot take legal or ethical responsibility for the work, manage copyright agreements, or assert the absence of conflicts of interest.
  • Human authors are solely responsible and accountable for the accuracy, integrity, and originality of the entire manuscript.

II. Manuscript Preparation

  • Accountability and transparency regarding AI use are essential. Authors must also ensure they understand the limitations of these tools, including the introduction of inaccuracies and biases. Falsified or fabricated citations or other content will result in an immediate rejection.
  • Restricted Use: AI is not permitted to generate, alter, or manipulate data.
    • In the event of ambiguity or uncertainty regarding AI usage, authors should contact their editor, managing editor, or executive editor.
  • Disclosure Requirements: Any use of generative AI must be disclosed at the time of submission. Please review the Artificial Intelligence Disclosure (AID) Framework (Weaver, 2024) to ensure you capture all areas of AI use and make a robust disclosure.
  • How to Disclose: Authors must include an AI Use Declaration Statement in their paper. Please include this at the end of the paper. The statement must detail:
    • The names and versions of the AI tools used.
    • The specific tasks the tools performed (e.g., "summarizing data," "drafting portions of the introduction", “language proofing”).
    • If you have used AI tools in data collection or analysis, please also provide a statement on how this meets the ethical requirements of your institution or governing body.
    • If no AI tools were used, the AI Use Declaration Statement should state this.
    • As noted above, please review the Artificial Intelligence Disclosure (AID) Framework (Weaver, 2024) to ensure you capture all areas of AI use.

III. Images, Figures, and Artwork

  • The use of generative AI to create or manipulate images, figures, and graphical abstracts is prohibited.

For Editors and Reviewers

  • Reviewers and editors must not upload any part of a manuscript into a generative AI tool. Uploading manuscripts violates authors’ confidentiality and proprietary rights.
  • If reviewers suspect undisclosed GenAI use by authors, they should report this to the editor handling the manuscript.
  • Disclosure Requirements: If a reviewer uses AI to edit the language of their report, they must disclose this use to the editor and in the report.
  • Editors and reviewers are fully responsible and accountable for the content, accuracy, and integrity of their reports.

Research Brief

Research briefs are short articles in this new section that report on pilot studies, studies based on a single site, and studies with small samples that would limit generalization. Research briefs serve to stimulate further research or alert researchers to work in progress.

Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal. Authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work (e.g., post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in this journal. Authors are permitted and encouraged to post their work online (e.g., in institutional repositories or on their website) prior to and during the submission process, as it can lead to productive exchanges, as well as earlier and greater citation of published work (See The Effect of Open Access).
